About the Space

The Wee Explore PlaySpace in the Children’s Room of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library is a destination for children (ages 0-5) and their grown-ups to ignite their imagination and learn through open-ended play and exploration. No reservations are required.

Custom Structures

A variety of educational elements, designed to be a full interactive experience, are featured in the 1000 sq. ft. space, which displays custom structures and panels to provide an opportunity for hands-on learning and development of early literacy skills, curiosity and imagination. Each structure includes colorful finishes and resins embedded with a variety of treasures to discover. The following four custom structures occupy the Wee Explore PlaySpace.

About the Project

This project is made possible in part by the generosity of the Sharks Foundation to the San José Public Library Foundation (SJPLF).

SJPL is proud to be the 2019/20 recipient of the Sharks Foundation’s Community Assist Grant, their largest grant, which helped augment the City’s investment in renovating the King Library’s Children’s Room to become a vibrant, exciting, and interactive space for children.

With a long history of community involvement, the Sharks Foundation is a wonderful partner for this space that integrates many components of San José life and culture. In recognition of the Sharks’ contribution, hockey sticks, pucks, and game tickets will be incorporated into the design elements of the custom structures along with representations of shark species, shark teeth, and other ocean life.
