Senior Category

I agree with the Senior Category. It's good to encourage more adults to enter the graphic novel contest to balance out the number of children that you have for this year contest. It seems that there are more kids than adult who enter the contest. Or, you could make another category for people who are 30 and over. For example, the adult category should be 18 to 30 years of age and another category for 30 and over. More adult would shy away from entering the contest because there are too many kids participating.

Ebooks?

I heard a rumor that the comics will be available as ebooks. Is that true? Where can I get them?

Ebooks?

Yes, the comics will be available as an ebook download. We’re still working out the details. Hopefully it should be available soon.

Senior Category

Thank you for your suggestion.

Is there going to be a video

Is there going to be a video posted online for this year contest like last year? I saw last year contest video online and it was great...

Is there going to be a video

No I'm sorry we do not have a video recording of the event, only photos.

SUGGESTION FOR NEXT YEAR CONTEST

Just a suggestion, It would be interesting if you guys have another category for "SENIOR" for next year contest. I'm pretty sure that there are great writers and artists over the age of 50. Comic book writer, Stan Lee from Marvel Comics, is a good example. So, instead of three category, which is "Children", "Teen", and "Adult", it would be awesome if you guys have four category including, "Senior".

age categories

I also like this idea. Perhaps the Children's idea can also be subdivided. For example, ages 9-12 and ages 8 & younger. A short story contest (no pictures) would also be nice for people who love to write but can't draw.

SUGGESTION FOR NEXT YEAR CONTEST

Thank you for your ideas.

When is the book of this year

When is the book of this year winners going to be available to the public to check out? This year's Ceremony was pretty good, kind of remind me of high school graduation. Replying to one of the person giving a comment on this site, yeah, I think it would be better to turn it into San Jose Public Library Graphic Novel convention with lots of people dressing up in Halloween costumes. It should also be nice to throw a huge party after the ceremony with live DJ and music for all the participants...Congratulation to all the winners of this year contest!

When is the book of this year

There were books available at the Awards ceremony as giveaways. Thank you for your support.

Award Ceremony

It would be better to have guess speakers like Children book author Belle Yang and others profession who works in the comic book industry to give speeches like the 2010 Graphic Novel Award Ceremony before giving out prizes. After watching a video that you guys posted online, I still think that the 2010 Graphic Novel Award Ceremony was better than this year besides the food, the atmosphere, and the guess speakers like the owner from HiJinks Comics in San Jose to present the award. Also, It seems that the 2010 Contest has more adult participants with over 77 and the winners of the adult category are at least over the age of 25. It just looks more professional since there are more adults than kids. Not that I don't like having children to participate, it just that most adults will not feel embarrass to participate or to show up at the Award Ceremony of the contest if there are more adult participants. Well, it's still a great Ceremony and it's good to see all the artist and writers, regardless of age, to get together since making a graphic Novel is really a solitary experience. I just wish that the Award Ceremony last more than an hour because I really enjoy it being there.

Oh. And, since I have no way

Oh. And, since I have no way of contacting you, to the 41-year-old man who won 3rd-place for adults, I'm glad you joined. Really adds a broader range to the age groups participating. :) I enjoyed your comic; reminds me of how Chinese Moon Festival's coming up at Overfelt Gardens.

Are you thinking what I'm

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? San Jose COMIC CONVENTION. Nah, I'm kidding. But yeah, I think an hour was a little too short. It would've been nice if we could've had more fun with it somehow. (this is another anonymous person replying; not the same person) I'm really glad there were adults there. I really did expect nothing but very young children and I'd be the only teenager 'round. You really covered a wide range of ages.

Are you thinking what I'm

Thank you for your comments.

San Jose Comic Convention!

San Jose Comic Convention! Sweet!!!

Award Ceremony

Thank you for your feedback. We actually had more overall participants this year than the last. Some of our guests were unable to participate this year due to other obligations.

comment on the Award Ceremony

I just want to let you know that the Award Ceremony at the Berryessa Branch Library was fantastic. It was bigger than what I have expected with a lot of people show up for the ceremony. You guys did a great job organizing it. However, it would be better if there are more judges who works in the Comic-book industry or professional-graphic novel creators to participate in the contest, which could make it even more exciting.

Comment on the Award Ceremony

Thank you for your feedback. Our guests for the Awards Ceremony were unable to come due to unavoidable circumstances. But I'm glad you still had a good time.

hey, just a question--- do

hey, just a question--- do you guys happen to have any more S.J. Art Museum tickets? thanks.

Question

I'm sorry, we don't have any more Museum tickets left.

Just my own anonymous

Just my own anonymous comment. Ceremony was great and I appreciate the prizes I got; you guys did do a great job. It's wonderful how you're reaching out to people of all ages. I was scared I was going to be surround by (no offense) a whole bunch of kids, but it really became a family thing. Lotta people got together with their families and friends. Even those who didn't win got something out of it (e.g. raffle prizes, etc.)

Just my own anonymous

Thank you very much. We appreciate your feedback.

Questions

I have several questions regarding this year contest. It mention on this site that you are given out Gift Card. My question is what kind of gift card is it and what the gift card is use for? Secondly, I would like to know if the library going to published the graphic novels of this year's winners like last year, when all the novels from the winners get published and distributed throughout the entire San Jose Public Library branches.

Questions

These are VISA gift cards, so you could use them anywhere. We will have copies of the work of the first, second and third place winners at the Awards Ceremony.

graphic novel

Do you contact the winners either by phone or email before the reception at the library on August 27? Do we have to be there in order to find out whether or not that we win?

Graphic Novel Awards

If you win, we will make every effort to notify you. You do not have to be present to win.

another copy right question

Will I be able to self-published and sell my graphic novel online that I have used for the contest?

another copyright question

Yes.

Copy right questions

I have 2 question regarding copy rights of my graphic novel that I have enter for the contest. First of all, once I use my graphic novel for the contest, does it means that the library will have the right to my story and artworks? Does it mean that I longer have to right to use my graphic novel (both artworks and story) once I have enter the contest for any reason. Secondly, If I'm planning to make a sequel to the graphic novel that I have use for the contest to self-published it and sell it online, will I be able to do that?

Copyright questions

SJPL can exhibit your work in the library and we can mention it in all promotional materials. We can also post it on our graphic novel contest page on the SJPL website. But you will always get credit for your work and the copyright always belong to you.

pages

What is the maximum and minimum number of pages needed for the graphic novel? Thank you.

pages

Maximum length is 8 pages, minimum is not specified. It is up to you.

touch up

If after copying it and the image is still too light, can I ink it to make it darker? It won't become an original would it?

touch up

It's up to you but remember that we will not return your submission.

Stapling

Do we need to staple or booklets? If so, should I staple my graphic novel the "regular" way; three along the left side? Or should I just staple it with one staple in the left-hand corner? Also, when they say "contact information", do they mean email, phone number, or address? Thanks!

Stapling

One staple in the left hand corner is perfect. Please include name, age, email address and phone number.

I need a watch

Dear Vidya Kilambi, today i rushed to the library and arrived at about 2 minutes after 6. Unfortunately, there was an issue with my printer. I know there is a very slim chance if any chance at all and a lot to ask for (let alone unfair to other entrees), but is there any chance i could turn in my graphic novel at another available time? I would be very grateful if that is possible. If this cannot happen, will there be another contest for graphic novels that I can enter mine in next year? Thanks in advance.

Next year

We are planning to have this contest again next year. But of course we cannot promise anything. Thnak you for checking with us.

thank you

thank you very much!

Submitting Graphic Novel

Is it okay to turn in the Graphjc Novel today instead of July 30?

Submitting Graphic Novel

Yes, that's a good idea.

That's up to you. Both are acceptable.

credit

if i were to submit my entry to a personal website (ie. blogspot, tumblr, etc.) how would i give the copy rights? i remember reading something about saying that it was an entry, but how would i say that? "this is an entry to a contest hosted by a local library" "[title] by _______, belongs to sj lib" or what? please tell me what to say because i don't know how to state it.

credit

You do not need to say anything. The copyright always belongs to you. SJPL only has rights to use your entry- for example we can publish it as a booklet and say that it was part of our Summer Reading contest, but you would get credit for your work.
