my vote for the IMPAC Dublin Award

The Tiger's Wife - the only one of the 7 titles on your list that I have read ;-) I was enthralled by Ms. Obreht's writing. She wrote most of this book while she was a grad student at Cornell. The book is set somewhere in the Balkans and is an engrossing description of a young woman who is studying to be a doctor. She has a very close relationship with her grandfather - and much of the book is her visualization of wartime (and other) events that her grandfather described to her when she was a child. It is a captivating portrayal - there are at least two unforgettable characters (aside from the tiger ;-). Ms Obreht's prose is at once precise, sometimes-grim, searing and nearly indelible. This is a book that will grab you by the throat and not let go until the very end - and there's not much more I can say without giving away too much of the story. Her descriptions of the 'man who would not die', among several others involving the tiger's visits to the village, will leave you slack-jawed.

Swamplandia was wonderful and funny. I highly recommend it. I also like 1Q84 very much.
