Please note these two important improvements to our eBook collections!
First, Axis 360 titles are now available in either the Blio or ePUB/PDF format – before, it was just the BLio format. The ePUB/PDF format works on Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo and other devices! You will need to use Adobe Digital Editions to get eBooks in the ePUB/PDF format. Kindle Fire does not support ePubs/PDFs – but you can still use Blio on your Kindle Fire.
Second, there is now an OverDrive app for the Nook! If you have a NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet or NOOK Color, you can borrow eBooks and audiobooks wirelessly using the OverDrive app. The app is free, but you will need a valid NOOK account to download the app.
Get help accessing eBooks, eAudioBooks, and eMusic – free from your library!

You are welcome to bring your own eReader or smartphone with you to each session. Sessions take place at a table set up near the entrance to the library.
This seminal reference book on all things book-related, for the serious or beginning bibliophile, is available in its entirety as a PDF download from this site: http://www.ilab.org/eng/documentation/29-john_carter_abc_for_book_collectors.html. This encyclopedia is filled with all sorts of interesting factoids; I learned that having a passion for uncut edges in books is called "deckle-fetishism".
If you haven't watched a TED Talk yet, I highly recommend you do! TED is a non-profit devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading" and stands for Technology, Entertainment & Design, an annual conference that started in 1984. Since then, they've created a great video library of short (20 minutes or less) lectures on lots of interesting topics.
The video embedded in this post is a great example of a shorter TED Talk. If you like it, don't stop there! Many of the speakers are also authors and you can follow up a TED Talk with the book! For example, Sir Kenneth Robinson's TED Talk is one of the most-watched videos online. And SJPL carries his book, Out of Our Minds: Learning to Be Creative.
Watch, then read!

Accessing Axis 360 eBooks on your Kindle Fire requires a Blio software installation. Here are detailed instructions for this process. Please contact Blio support if you have any issues:
Make sure to use a computer to first set up your Blio account!
To start the process, please make sure you are on the Home screen by clicking on the Home button.
In the upper right of the screen you will see the Settings icon. It looks like a circular gear. Touch this icon.
Then, select the option that says “More.”
In the next screen, you should see a list of options. Select the option for “Device.” Please note that you may need to scroll the screen up to find it.
In the next screen, select “ON” for the option to “Allow Installation of Applications for Unknown Sources.” Remember to set this option back to “off” when finished.
Now you'll need to download the app. Go back to the Kindle Fire’s home screen. Then click on the tab at the top right for “Web.”
Type in the following URL: http://bits.blioreader.com/update/KNFB Blio 2.5.1 PROD.apk and choose “Go” to start the download. The file will download automatically.
You should see a number in the upper left of the Kindle Fire. Touch this area.
Next you should see the KNFB Blio 2.5.1 PROD.apk downloading.
Once the orange progress bar finishes going to the right, the download is complete. Touch where it says “KNFB Blio 2.5.1 PROD.apk, Download Complete.”
The next screen will list the permissions the app requires. Click on the word “Install” in the grey area under the permissions. You should then see a line that says “Installing.”
After it finishes it will say “Application Installed.” Click “Done” at the bottom of the screen.
Next press the Home button on the Kindle Fire to return to the home screen.
Now, launch the Blio app. You should see the icon for Blio in your carousel at the home page. Touching this icon will start up the app. You can also launch Blio from the Apps menu.
Log in with your Blio ID. Blio will synch with your Book Shelf and bring in purchased titles and borrowed items from Axis 360.

Allan Wolf’s The Watch that Ends the Night: Voices from the Titanic won the award for Distinguished Achievement in Production. “This production tells the story of the passengers on the TITANIC through interlinked poems from multiple perspectives. Five narrators help listeners keep the large cast straight as they create appropriate and distinct voices for each character.” You may listen to an excerpt of this audiobook at the Audies Competition site. Currently in our neighborhood, there is a copy only at Santa Clara County Library though.
For downloadable audiobooks at SJPL, visit Overdrive; and use library card and PIN to download. Below are a couple high-interest titles:

Remember Reading Rainbow? This fun public TV show starring LeVar Burton encouraged reading by focusing on a theme from a book, explored through segments and stories; it also included book recommendations. You can view all the episodes on YouTube. The show is now making a come-back as a for-pay app for the iPad; an Android version is coming soon! Look for it in your app stores and check out this recent interview with LeVar Burton.
