The library coordinates programs that support the high quality, affordable early childhood care and learning opportunities envisioned in the City of San José's Early Education Initiative which stated the importance of access to these for all San José children and families, with the goal that all children will enter school with the foundation needed for academic and social success.
Smart Start San José provides a variety of services for parents, families, childcare providers, early educators and the business community.
Month of the Young Child is highlighted by the San José Children's Faire, a free one day event for children ages 2-12 years and their parents or caregivers.
The Library & Early Education Commission is the City Commission for the library's early education programs. In 2013, the Library Commission and Early Care and Education Commission merged to form the new Library & Early Education Commission.
