Concert for World Peace: Honoring the Inspired Teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, JR.


"A United America for World Peace"
NO ADMISSION FEE. EVERYONE IS INVITED ENJOY THIS MUSIC

 

Concert for World Peace will feature a one-hour performance of music for your QUIET TIMES AND INNER PEACE by The Inner Peace Orchestra under the direction of trumpeter Eddie Gale (San José’s Ambassador of Jazz since 1974) with guest student performers Marley DeSantis (from Burnett Academy Middle School, San José) on piano and Dezaray Flores (from Wilcox High School, Santa Clara) on cello.

 

President Mohammad Qayoumi of San José State University and City Councilman Sam Liccardo will give welcoming remarks regarding the theme: “Honoring the inspired teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., A United America for World Peace.”

The Promise of Hope:  Can We Overcome?

Join us at the 84th Birthday Celebration Honoring the Legacy of Civil Rights Leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

WHAT: Join us for the annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.  This event will feature live music, a libation ceremony, a theatrical presentation of Dr. King speaking, and reflections by the Community.  

There will be a special award given to acknowledge the lives and contributions of Dr. Herman Hyatt and Henry Gage Sr. presented by the Legacy Committee and the San Jose City Council.

Korean Language Class for the First Time in King Library


"Gangnam Style" (K-pop single by South Korean musician Psy) has become an "international sensation" today. 

 

There are a fairly large amount people who want to learn Korean language and Korean culture because of K-Pop, K-Drama, or Korean Wave.

  

Learn practical Korean Conversation such as greetings, numbers, and food. Chat topics may include K-Pop, K-Drama, and K-Culture.

    San José's New Minimum Wage Ordinance


    Cash imageThe new Minimum Wage Ordinance was approved by voters in the last November election and takes effect March 11, 2013. Are you an employer in the city of San José and have questions about it? The San José Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce is hosting a free informational seminar, January 29, 9 am- 10:30 am,  and City staff will be present to answer questions about the ordinance. The seminar is free but seating is limited, so please register in advance.  



    Native Plants in a California Garden: a FREE Gardening Program at King Library


    It is the beginning of a new year.  Are you planning a new garden landscape?  Do you know there are many species of California native plants that you can grow to make a beautiful garden to enjoy? Native plants are plants that evolved in an area before modern humans or their animals wandered through.  

     

    California is a distinctive state with a variety of over 4,800 species of beautiful native plants.  The King Library has invited Rebecca Schoenenberger, the principal at California Nativescapes, a design, installation, and maintenance landscaping company to give a presentation.  She will introduce several easy-to-grow native plants for your garden.  

     

    This program is sponsored by the Friends of King Library. No reservation is required.  All ages are welcome.  Please come and enjoy this special informative event.

    Silicon Valley Reads 2013 Event Schedule Now Posted!


    Silicon Valley Reads has now posted the 2013 schedule of events on their website.

    Kickoff for Silicon Vallery Reads will be on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013 7:30 p.m. at Campbell Heritage Theatre when authors Brian Castner and Sue Diaz are interviewed on stage by Mercury News columnist Mike Cassidy.
     

    These themes are also explored in books for children  and young adults:  Night Catch [PreK-Gr 2] by Brenda Ehrmantraut; Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine and a Miracle [Gr 2-5] by Brian Dennis, Kirby Larson and Mary Nethery; Back Home [Gr 5-8] by Julia Keller; and Purple Heart [Teens] by Patricia McCormick.

    Each year Silicon Valley Reads encourages everyone in Santa Clara County to read and discuss the same book during the months of February and March. Free public events are held in  libraries, schools and community locations, and the book is featured in  high school, colleges and book clubs discussions.

    Book Cover: Happy New Year Everywhere!A New Year means new Friday Fun activities in the Children's Room at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. Each Friday at 4:00 PM we will have a different activity: crafts, animals, stories, making play dough and more! Let's see what January, 2013 has to offer:

     

    Friday, January 4: All About Penguins! Learn about penguins, hear some stories and then make a penguin craft using a paper cup, felt and googly eyes. What fun! Of course the library has many books about penguins that you can borrow, take home and read.

     

    Friday, January 11: Goldilocks and the Three What? There are so many versions of this fairy tale that it could be three martians, three hares, three osos or maybe just Goldilocks and one bear! Enjoy some stories about that adventurous young lady Goldilocks and then make a special craft! Here are some titles you might want to try: Rubia and the Three Osos, Goldie and the Three Bears, The Three Snow Bears, Leola and the Honeybears, Beware of the Bears and yes Golilocks and Just One Bear. Of course there are many more versions!

     

    Friday, January 18: Celebrate Dr. King's Birthday: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. Join us as we celebrate his life, his dreams and then create a beautiful "Freedom Bell." We have many books about Dr. King that you can borrow.

     

    Friday, January 25: Family Movie Fun: Join us for a fun family movie and enjoy some refreshments too. It's a great way to start off the weekend and don't forget that San Jose Public Library has many DVDs  for children that you can borrow for free and keep for three weeks. Now that's a bargain!!

    Lizard Kingdom is heavily influenced by bands such as the Fall of Troy, Ricky Martin, Sha Na Na, Nickelback, Milli Vanilli, and Brian Wilson. In our spare time, we enjoy making balloon animals. Collectively our favorite food is pickles. Our pre-show ritual is we gather around, and run with scissors to display bravery.
