Story-Time Books

At the story-times this week, we read books with numbers as their theme.

  • Little Quack's Hide & Seek by Lauren Thompson tells the story of 5 little ducks playing hide and seek with their mother.  As each duck finds a hiding space, the book counts down the remaining ducklings. This story teaches subtraction, in a simple way.
  • Two at the Zoo tells the story of a grandfather and grandson who visit the zoo, counting the animals they see from one to ten. ; We offer many other books on counting, as well as stories in rhyme.
  • Chicka Chicka 1,2,3 by Bill Martin is a wonderful book to teach children their numbers up to 100. It's also in rhyme.
  • Hickory Dickory Dock by Keith Baker is a wonderful retelling of the familiar nursery rhyme. Read along as animals react as the clock strikes one through twelve.

Special Storytime Reading of "One"

Book cover of One by Kathryn OtoshiVolunteer readers from Project Cornerstone will read One by Kathryn Otoshi to children and families on Tuesday, March 16 at 11:30 AM at the Edenvale Branch Library. The reading of the book will be followed by a discussion of the themes of the book. One is a Silicon Valley Reads Children's Companion book for 2011. One introduces children to numbers, counting, and colors. The book begins with Blue, a mellow character who enjoys looking up at the sky and other activities. Blue likes to be with Yellow, Green, Purple and Orange. Blue feels uncomfortable around Red, a bad-tempered character who bullies the others. Along comes One, who just might have the courage to stand up to Red. What will happen next? Come to the library and find out! This book is great for pre-schoolers and children in grades K-3.
