E-Book Support Tip: Finding A Checked Out E-Book When It "Disappears" For A Kindle Device

 OverDrive Digtal Library Logo

You receive an e-mail saying that the e-book you put on request is available for checkout. You log into Overdrive, go to the "my waiting list" link, and check out it for your Kindle device. Everything seems fine, but when you go to your Kindle account the item isn't there. Overdrive doesn't show it in "my waiting list," or "book bag" either. What happened to it? Not to worry! Just be sure to check the "my bookshelf" section of your Overdrive account. This is where an e-book should go if it's checked out correctly. From there download it to your Kindle.

E-Book Support Tip: Making Sure to Check Out a Requested Item Before it Expires

Another commonly asked question involves customers who say that they received an e-mail saying that the book they requested was available but when they go to the Overdrive site and select My Waiting List the book isn’t there.  Here are top 3 reasons why this may occur.

  1. The person entered a different library card and pin number than the one they used to make the request.
  2. The title is held for 3 days (72 hours) from the time an email notification is sent to the customer. If not checked out within that time it will be authomatically returned to the collection and must be requested again.
  3. Once a the hold item is added to the bookbag it must be checked out within 30 minutes or it will be automatically returned to the collection and must be requested again.

Not familiar with RSS feeds? - Watch a quick video that explains them.

RSS icon To get the address for the feed: Login to your account and click on the little RSS icon by "Account Activity".

The feed will generate alert messages for the following activity:

  • Requested library item(s) are ready for pickup
  • Link+ item(s) are ready for pickup
  • Item(s) are due soon
  • Item(s) are due today
  • Item(s) are overdue
  • New fine(s) or fee(s)

For privacy, the feed just mentions this generic activity; it doesn’t say specifically which titles are due, on the hold shelf, etc.  You can click on one of the messages and then login to your account to see the exact details.  A date appears at the beginning of each message so you can tell which activity is current. Enjoy!
