Mad ScienceEveryone is invited to join us at Edenvale Branch Library on Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 at 6:00 PM for a FREE science treat with Mad Science's Phantastic Phun!

You've seen a rainbow in the sky, now watch as we make one in a tube. 

 

Learn all about gravity, balance and centripetal force.

 

Be dazzled by some amazing optical illusions.  You won't believe your eyes!

 

This program is best for kids ages 3 to 12, and of course their parents.

 

This program is part of the 2012 Summer Reading Celebration and is made possible through the generous contributions of the Friends of the Edenvale Branch Library!



Mad Science: UP, UP and AWAY


Book Cover: Full of Hot AirMad Science is back by popular demand! Last time we learned about Fire and Ice; this time it's Up, Up & Away!

Up, Up & Away takes the principles of air pressure to a new high!  Some of the things the children can observe include: the creation of a hot air balloon, giant smoke rings generated by a vortex generator and a hovercraft in action. WOW! This fun, exciting and educational program will be at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library on Saturday, January 28 at 3:00PM. Don't miss it!

The library has many books for children who are interested in all kinds of flying machines, click here to see the many books you can borrow. Plus if you're interested in the first hot-air balloon flight which happened in 1783 check out this fun book: Hot Air, The (Mostly) True Story of the First Hot-Air Balloon Ride by Marjorie Price as told from the point of view of the duck, sheep and rooster who were the first passengers!



Super Saturday Programs at King Library


King Library (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library)It's a Saturday and your kids are bored or you're wondering what would be a great way to spend some quality time with your family. Well, come down to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in downtown San Jose and check out this amazing building! There are 8 floors to wander through, interesting artworks just waiting to be discovered and of course a wonderful Children's Room to visit. Time your visit so that you can enjoy these wonderful programs that we will be having in the Children's Room at 3:00PM.

 

  • January  7: ABC to Drawing - This is a new program being offered by our wonderful volunteer Vidhi. Vidhi teaches the children how to create pictures using the letters of the alphabet and numbers. In this first program she taught the kids how to draw a monkey, bee, tiger and lion. The children and adults who attended had a great time.   • January 14: Celebrate Dr. King's Birthday with Stories and Crafts - January 16 is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Come listen to stories, sing some songs and create some crafts all in honor of this great man. The King Library has a Dr. Martin Luther King Civil Rights Collection on the 3rd floor with a time line, books, dvds and cds. Check it out and of course the San Jose Public Library system offers many books on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  that can be borrowed.
  • January 21: Stuff! An Arts and Crafts Program for Children - This special program is offered each month by our talented volunteer Chris. Chris always offers an interesting program so join us on the 21st and see what fun activity she's cooked up.
  • January 28: Mad Science: Up, Up and Away - Join Mad Science for this fun, educational program especially for children ages 5-12. We will observe the creation of a hot air balloon, giant smoke rings generated by a vortex generator and see a hovercraft in action. WOW!

So mark these dates on your calendar and make your Saturdays, Super Saturdays at the King Library. Remember all the programs are FREE!



Mad Science: Up, Up and Away


picture of a hot air balloon Staff from Mad Science® will be at the Evergreen Branch Library on Saturday, January 29th to deliver a unique, hands-on science experience for children. This program is highly interactive and entertaining and is appropriate for children aged 5 to 12 years.

 

The program Up, Up & Away takes the principles of air pressure to a new high!  Some of the things the children can observe include:

Mad Science: Fire and Ice


Cover of Mad Science: What a BlastThere will be some Mad Science happening at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library on Saturday, January 15 at 3:00PM. Children will explore "magical" chemical potions, the wonders of dry ice and the dynamics of air pressure. There will be a gassy taste test and a super spectacular bubbling potion.  So if you want to spark your child's imagination and curiosity and have them learn some science in a fun and entertaining way then this program is just right for you. After the program& check out some fun science experiments books for that budding scientist to look at.

 

Remember that parking in downtown San Jose on Saturday is FREE!
