It's the perfect time to take up a new hobby, as the days turn darker, and weather becomes chilly and rainy. We tend to spend the late Fall and Winter seasons closer to home, focusing on the cozy and the comfortable. And knitting is the perfect hobby for this time of year!
The oldest known piece of knitting is a pair of socks from ancient Egypt. It is believed that knitting originated in the Middle East and spread throughout the known world. There are a variety of techniques and patterns found throughout many cultures. The art of knitting has evolved over time but is still a valuable thing to learn. It keeps the hands, and the mind engaged, culminating into creative clothing pieces and (even) interesting works of art.
Some of our branch locations even host knitting and crocheting clubs, where you can learn some new skills and interact with other creators!

Final Thoughts:
- My maternal grandmother was very talented with sewing, knitting, and crocheting. She even won several awards for her work.
- One of my goals this winter is to learn how to knit better. I know some of the basics but need to improve my skills.
- It is difficult to knit when your pet rabbit has decided that all the yarn belongs to her, and then you have a territorial tug-of-war scenario happening.
- She has even leapt up onto the couch to steal the yarn from me. It's adorable and annoying at the same time.
- Maybe I should go to one of the wonderful knitting and crocheting clubs that we offer at San Jose Public Library!
