What is BollyBe?

BollyBE is a dance initiative dedicated to celebrating and sharing the beauty of South Asian culture through music and dance

Meet Anusha U., the Wonderful Volunteer Making it Happen!

Anusha U. is a high school senior at Presentation High School and the captain of the Bollywood dance team, Jazba. Anusha choreographs dances, teaches routines and leads her team to competitions and showcases across the Bay Area. Anusha's passion for dance and cultural representation inspired her to start BollyBE.

In Anusha's own words,

BollyBE was born out of a desire to introduce and represent South Asian culture in spaces where it has historically been underrepresented. As a young girl, I often noticed the lack of South Asian programs in our local library system. This inspired me to start BollyBE in January 2023, with the goal of filling this cultural gap and creating a platform for South Asians to share their rich heritage with the broader community. I believe that dance is a universal language that unites us and can be instrumental in breaking down cultural barriers and fostering a spirit of inclusivity. My goal is to create an inviting atmosphere where everyone, regardless of age or ability, feels welcome to join in, learn something new, and have a great time. Additionally, BollyBE provides a fun and engaging way to incorporate physical exercise into people’s routines.

The BollyBE workshops have been hosted at various locations, including West Valley Branch, Cambrian Branch, Morgan Hill Library, Milpitas Library, Saratoga Library, Calabazas Branch Library, Alum Rock Branch Library, and more. These workshops have brought joy and unity to people of diverse backgrounds, introducing participants to Indian culture while offering a fun and dynamic way to stay active and healthy. BollyBE has had workshops with a turnout of 30+ people, demonstrating the significant impact BollyBE has on the community.
