December 16th is Jane Austen Day! This holiday celebrates the works of one of the most prolific female writers in the 1800s. Jane Austen's novels have never gone out of print and have remained popular even into the modern day. There have been many movies and miniseries based upon her works, and many a British actor/actress has these films in their acting credits. Her writings have also inspired other writers to create works of fiction around her characters: "Death Comes to Pemberley" and "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" immediately come to mind as Austen-inspired works.
Bath, England is host to the Jane Austen Festival every September. This festival not only honors the writer but also recreates the Regency time period in which she lived and draws visitors from all over the world.
If you want more Jane Austen and Jane Austen-inspired works, stop by your local San Jose Public Library to check out some books and movies. Note: these selections are perfect for a dreary winter day. Have your hot tea and scones at the ready!
