Meet Local Author Nina Simon at Cambrian and Pearl Mystery Book Club (Virtual)

Local Author Nina Simon

After a successful author visit in June with Cara Black at our Virtual Cambrian and Pearl Mystery Club, Volunteer Leader Pam Crider asked me to inquire if local mystery author Nina Simon was available.

With the aid of Bookshop Santa Cruz, I was able to contact Nina, who is busy promoting the paperback version of her latest book, Mother-Daughter Murder Night.

Never expecting to write a book, her mother's cancer diagnosis changed Nina's priorities in 2020.  Her story, Mother-Daughter Murder Night, became an ode to her dear mother.  The story's characters include a grandmother, mother, and daughter.  All try to solve a murder mystery and in the process find a deeper connection.  She says that writing the novel brought her "great joy."

The Mystery Book Club's Choice of Mother-Daughter Murder Night

The selection of each month's title is done months in advance by Pam and the Club members.

Pam provides a list of titles that she believes the Club members will enjoy for the next half year.  Carefully curating the list, Pam considers books that sound interesting to the diverse tastes of the members.

Upon completion of the list, Pam submits the selection to the members, who discuss the titles and authors after a Club meeting.  Sometimes, members offer suggestions of their own.  Then, Pam and the members select titles after a lively discussion about each option's merits.

After much discussion, Pam and the members submit a long list of dates and titles.  Book selection night is always one of my favorite meetings with the Club, as the members' banter resembles a delightful chat between dear friends.

This program is just one example of how volunteers enrich our communities everyday by offering diverse programming. Whether you are passionate about dancing, literacy, enjoy working with children, or simply want to make a difference in someone’s life, volunteering at the library is a fulfilling opportunity that can have a lasting impact on both volunteers and patrons alike.
