National Library Week
Founded by the American Library Association in 1958, we celebrate National Library Week every April. National Library Week 2025 is April 6 –12 and this year’s theme is “Drawn to the Library.” It's a time to celebrate everything that draws millions of visitors to libraries every day. At San Jose Public Library, that includes the books and other media in our vast catalog, as well as so much more, including free state park and county park passes, museum passes, educational programs and events for all ages, meeting spaces, volunteer opportunities, access to iPads, Chromebooks, and laptops, and free consultation services with lawyers and social workers.
Celebrate the Week!
Monday, April 7: Right to Read Day
April 7, 2025, marks the third annual Right to Read Day. In the past few years, the American Library Association has tracked more challenges to books in schools and libraries than at any other time since it started keeping track over 20 years ago. On this day, the ALA releases its annual State of America's Libraries report, which includes a list of the Top Ten Most Challenged Books of the past year. The Unite Against Book Bans Web site offers more information and an action toolkit for concerned citizens who want to stand up for the right to read.
Tuesday, April 8: National Library Workers Day
Libraries wouldn’t work without the staff members who work in them. This is a special day to show appreciation for all that they do.
Wednesday, April 9: National Library Outreach Day: "Your Library, Drawn to You"
This is a day to celebrate and recognize the ways library staff get out of their buildings to meet community members where they are, whether it be at schools or community events such as Viva Calle. San Jose residents who cannot make it to the library due to temporary or permanent disability can utilize the library-by-mail service.
Thursday, April 10: Take Action for Libraries Day
Libraries are essential resources in our democracy, and this is a day to remind community leaders and legislators of the importance of funding and support for them. In 2025, this is more urgent than ever.
