National Library Card Sign-up Month

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month!

Since 1987, the American Library Association has recognized September as Library Card Sign Up-Month to promote awareness of the great back-to-school resources a library card can provide (not to mention so much else)! San José Public Library cards provide access to a wealth of books, ebooks, movies and music, tech devices, homework help, and more.

You can also use a library card to reserve a computer or study room at SJPL locations.

SJPL Card Options

SJPL cards are always free and available to all California residents! Read about our different membership options.

We also have a variety of types of cards:

  • Full Access Card: Get everything the library has to offer with a physical card that also works with all of our online resources. An added bonus is that you can choose a library card design to represent your local sports team or a local artist!
  • eLibrary Card: This is a virtual card that allows you to access all of our online resources. It is available to all California residents, valid for one year, and does not require you to visit an SJPL location.
  • Limited Status Card: If you can present a photo ID but not proof of current address at an SJPL location, we can issue you a Limited Status Library Card that will let you check out one physical item at a time, as well as access all our e-resources. When you return to show proof of address, staff can upgrade your card to a Full Access Library Card.
  • Student Cards: SJPL has collaborated with San Jose School Districts to provide Student Cards to local students. Read more about participating school districts and Student Card policy.
  • Educator Cards: Do you work for a K-12 school in the city of San José? You can apply online for an Educator Card, helping you access resources for your classroom.
