A new year is coming, time to make those resolutions!
Well, perhaps, let's consider making some personal growth instead. The Library has many resources for personal growth.
When I think of new things to try at the start of the new year, I also think of hobbies that I might have wanted to try, but just didn't, for whatever reason. So I will include links for that, too!
Personal Growth Opportunities
On our redesigned site, you will notice the "Learning" section in our navigation at the top. Select this and you will notice the column to the far right called "Personal Growth."
If you are considering a big life change, here are some options to explore:
- Career Online High School - Obtain your high school diploma
- Citizenship & Immigration - Prepare to become a U.S. citizen
- SJPL Works: Career & Business - Learn how to polish your resume, interview, and other job skills
- Digital Skill Building Pathways - Practice technology skills to improve your computer literacy. I love the DMV guide, personally!
- Social Work Services - Free social service information and referrals
- Self-Publishing - Scroll to the end to learn how to publish your own work!
- Virtual Privacy Lab - Check out those neat toolkits!
Equity & Inclusion
The Library is a place where everyone belongs.
I thought that there were a couple of Personal Growth opportunities from the Equity & Inclusion Column:
- Community Engagement - If you'd like to do more in your neighborhood!
- Equity & Inclusion - If you'd like to learn more about how everyone has a seat at the table in the Library!
What About Trying Something New?
Like last week, if you go to the "Books & eResources" section, select eResources by Subject.
Here is a list of the many subjects to try out in this new year (you may need your library card & PIN to access):
- Arts & Entertainment - I especially like access to Coursera's 5000 courses
- Business & Money - For those looking to do market research, start up a company, search local and national directories, or access Consumer Reports or Value Line.
- Citizenship & Immigration - Including the very helpful Gale Legal Forms.
- Computers & Technology - I like the two fairly new self-guided courses: Fiero Code for those 8-18 who want to learn coding and Northstar for those wanting to learn basic digital skills.
- Culture, Travel & Biography - I like the new access to recordings of performing arts and music.
- Current Events - Includes both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal!
- DIY Home & Hobbies - Learn how to repair your car, start a hobby or do a home improvement project!
- Health & Wellness - Including the always helpful Medline Plus.
- History & Genealogy - Lots of different history databases and My Heritage, for those searching for genealogy information.
- Jobs & Career - Different choices for career preparation!
- Law, Government, Voting, & Politics - I especially like the Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints database, which balances different viewpoints.
- Literacy, Literature, & Self-Publishing - Novelist Plus is a great resource for expanding your reading horizons. There is a separate one for grades K-8.
- San Jose & California - Check out the Sanborn Maps California for street maps from 1867 to 1970.
- Science & Nature - I like the virtual lab.
