Silicon Valley Reads 2025

Community Reading: January – March 2025

Offered from late January to the end of March 2025, Silicon Valley Reads is an annual community program that selects books focused on a contemporary theme. It offers free events to Santa Clara County residents. These events seek to engage our community in reading, thinking, and discussing the topic. There are two goals:

  • Encourage the love of reading and learning.
  • Offer a welcoming forum where our diverse community can come together to share different perspectives.

This year's theme is Empowering Humanity: Technology for a Better World. Learn from those on the forefront of the AI movement, explore ways in which technology impacts our daily lives and future, address questions related to ethics, and discuss how we can create a positive impact using the tools that are rapidly becoming accessible to more and more people.

Silicon Valley Reads is presented by San José Public Library, Santa Clara County Library District, and the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

Kickoff Event: Thursday, January 30

The 2025 Silicon Valley Reads kickoff event will be on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 7:00 PM. San Jose Mercury News columnist Sal Pizarro will moderate a thought-provoking conversation about technology, humanity, and our future with authors Dr. Fei Fei Li (The Worlds I See), Ray Nayler (The Mountain in the Sea), and Charlee Dyroff (Loneliness & Company). There will even be two robot dogs as special guests, and a chance to get your books signed by the authors (their books will be sold onsite by Books, Inc.)

You can register to either attend the event in person at the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) at De Anza College, or register to watch the live-streamed event. Adjacent to VPAC at De Anza, the Euphrat Museum of Art will be showing a companion exhibit, Encoding Empathy, which will open at the kickoff event and run until March 31.
