Summer Learning: Graphic Novels


We are another week into Summer Learning, and this week we are focusing on some of the amazing Graphic Novels available from the library. Do you love to draw and tell stories? In addition to reading some of the titles on the Graphic Novel Booklist, you can make your own and enter it into the library's Graphic Novel Making Contest. Let your creativity flow in this annual all ages competition, check out last year's winners and hurry with your submission as entries close July 31. In the mean time, here are some of our favorite graphic novels that we put together in the Graphic Novel Booklist and always available online comics on Overdrive and Hoopla.

Follow along with the adorable Alphabuddies in this beginning reader graphic novel. Want a touch of humor? Check out the funny Super Pancake,a clever and silly graphic novel about a pancake named Peggy who accidentally develops superpowers, or get drawn into a magical children's retelling of the epic Beowulf in Bea Wolfe .

Enlighten Me , by Eisner award nominated author Minh Lê, follows a young boy at on a family trip to a silent meditation retreat.  Family Style follows an immigrant familys journey through food, which takes on a different meaning in each chapter.  In Limbo delves into the coming-of-age journey of a Korean-American girl, Deborah (Jung-Jin) Lee, as she navigates her identity and sense of belonging between a New Jersey suburb and Seoul, South Korea. As she goes to South Korea, she realizes something has changed her perspective on her family, her heritage and herself.

Lastly, check out a few great graphic novels for adults such as Wash Day Diaries, a series of stories that celebrate Black joy and the resilience of black women as they share how they care for each other.
